It was a time of great strife.
The people turned against one another,
their faces covered in shadows
so that all they could see
in their brothers and sisters around them
was darkness.

Once there was an uneasy harmony,
a harmony that took centuries to build.
Now the people built only walls.
The shadows whispered in their ears–
told the people that
only darkness could defeat darkness.
The walls grew taller
and the darkness was certain it had won.
The people had forgotten what it was like
to see the light in each other's faces…
…to see the light in themselves.

Some cowered in dark corners, terrified.
Others waged war against their brothers and sisters,
still unable to see whose blood covered their hands.
But high above them,
echoing against the walls across the land,
a voice cried out:
"I have found the light!"

And then they looked up.

The people saw the light above them.
It still shined despite the walls.
They struggled to climb upward.
They tore the walls down one by one.
It took great effort,
but the light flooded the land.
The people could again see their brothers and sisters
and remembered:
only the light can defeat darkness.

And there is always light.
